Getting COMFY in 2018

Alright, you’re hungover, I am too. Your mouth is dry, you’re thirsty, and you’re most likely craving a Cinnabon or some Chick-Fil-A. You don’t want to get out of bed, or off the floor, or wherever you woke up, let alone even think in this particular moment.

But even in this delirious state, you still realize it’s the start of something new. And it feels so right to be here with you (that’s a brutal High School Musical reference, I apologize). But seriously, it is known that today is a day for transition and transformation; rejuvenation and rebirth; creation and commitment; it’s the acclaimed New Years Resolution Day.

This is not one of those click bait “How to MAKE and STICK to your New Years Resolutions” articles. Rather, it is an article that is introducing a certain mindset. It’s introducing a way of thought that may run counter to many traditionalists out there, but may appeal to many of you who wish to break the rules a little bit. It is a mindset completely based on YOU. It is a mindset about Getting COMFY.

Getting COMFY, specifically, is a 5-step morning routine to energize the body and soothe the mind. Getting COMFY, more broadly, is a movement based on Getting COMFY waking up in the morning, Getting COMFY in your own skin, and Getting COMFY with the rest of your life.

Getting COMFY: Your Morning Guide to Daily Happiness, is a book coming out on January 31st that highlights these ideas.

The routine is simple. It is a collection of recommendations that I have gathered from studying the world’s top performers, athletes, and businesspeople. The primary focus is on overcoming anxiety and maintaining positivity and happiness no matter what obstacles may come our way. In a year in which so much in the world is rapidly changing, this morning focus will allow you stability, confidence, and perspective the more you practice it. It looks like this:

C

C stands for Calm. There is this daunting feeling we all have when that alarm clock goes off. The trick to beating that annoying ringing and Getting COMFY approaching your day is to simply remain calm. Calmin’ practices include yoga, meditation, stretching, sitting in silence, but the common thread here is that these all battle the overlapping, overwhelming, and over complicated thoughts that are going on in our heads. Getting calm will allow us the freedom and clarity we need to have a great day.

O

O stands for Openness. There are 2 ways to open up in the morning. The first is with yourself and the second is with others. Acknowledging imperfection, but providing positive reinforcement is the best advice I have for Getting COMFY with who you are as a person. Highlight and embrace strengths, but be aware of weaknesses. WRITE SHIT DOWN. There is such a negative connotation associated with “journaling” or keeping a “diary” but it is of utmost importance for self-reflection and understanding who you are and who you want to become.

Opening up to others is easy and fun. Reach out to an old friend, tell somebody to have a great day, or make yourself vulnerable and try to contact that CEO you’ve always wanted to chat with. The paradox of personal growth is that there is certainly a reliance on others to learn the most about ourselves.

M

M stands for Movement. It’s no secret that exercise is healthy. And maybe right now, when all you want is a burger and a couch, it does not seem that appealing, but the second you can overcome this sedentary state, your entire psyche will improve.

I was a heavy kid. I was the kid who had a dessert after breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and was constantly eating off other people’s plates after I had finished my own. Years later, I still love to eat, but I have discovered the importance of movement. At first it was for my physicality, but even after losing the weight, I still felt like that chubby little kid, even though I didn’t necessarily look like it. I even still feel this way after a long weekend of drinking and eating garbage. But the second I start to get this feeling is the second I go on a run, get to the weight room, do jumping jacks in my room, whatever it takes to clear and energize my mind in my pursuit of Getting COMFY with who I am.

F

F stands for funny. Smiles are contagious. Laughs are contagious. Start your day off by making yourself laugh or by making others laugh, and by putting yourself in the mindset that you shouldn’t take yourself so seriously. Take what you do seriously, but do it with a sense of perspective and an open heart.

A doctor asking, “Which one of you is pregnant?” to a husband and wife is a perfect example of the importance of laughter. It brings a sense of ease even to the most strenuous of situations. It allows us to appreciate our lives as a minute-to-minute journey with inexplicable, uncontrollable obstacles, rather than as a finite path with no spontaneity or adventure.

Y

Y stands for YOU. It is your passion, your choice, whatever you would like to do, practice it every single morning. Play an instrument, learn a language, read, write, just do something that allows you to know that whatever occurs the rest of your day, you can at least say you had a fantastic fucking morning.

I say that we are breaking the rules here because this entire routine is a work in progress, just as your New Years Resolution should be. So what if you skip a day, don’t mesh with a particular recommendation, or can’t decide on the perfect combination? Getting COMFY is about experimentation – finding out what works best for you, makes you happy, and makes you comfy going into the rest of your day. If you miss a day, fuck it, you pick up the next day right where you left off.

Resolutions, routines, guides, or whatever you want to call them should not preach perfection, or else they would not be necessary in the first place.

Let’s not stick to our resolutions in 2018. Let’s augment them, practice them, work on them, but let’s not let the fear of not sticking to them prevent us from not pursuing them at all.

Make small incremental changes to your mornings, and the rest will follow. Get a little daring, get a little weird, and most importantly, Get COMFY.
